Captain of the Pirates Andrew McCutchen (37, Pittsburgh Pirates) is one hit away from reaching 2,000 career hits after returning to his hometown team.
McCutchen added one more hit on Aug. 8 during a home game against the Oakland Athletics. It was his 50th hit of the season and 1998th of his career.
This puts McCutchen just two hits away from reaching 2,000 for his career. He is very likely to reach the milestone this week.
He is only the fifth active player to reach 2,000 career hits. Miguel Cabrera has over 3,000 hits, followed by Joey Votto, Nelson Cruz, and Elvis Andrus.
Freddie Freeman is right behind McCutchen with 1985, and Jose Altuve and Evan Longoria have over 1,900 hits.
However, McCutchen will only become the 294th player in Major League history to reach 2,000 hits, meaning there are 293 players in Major League history who have done so before him.
McCutchen, who has been in the majors for 15 years, returned to Pittsburgh this season. It’s been six years since the 2017 season.
His numbers are good. He’s down from his prime, but in 54 games through Aug. 8, he’s batting .269 with eight home runs and 23 RBIs, a .381 slugging percentage and an .816 OPS.
Pittsburgh is also 32-29 through eight games with a .525 winning percentage, good for second place in the National League Central. That’s a big jump from last year’s .383 winning percentage.
